This document offers a series of suggestions that we believe will improve emergency department care for people with mental health and addiction problems, reduce demand on emergency departments, and strengthen the capacity of the community sector to address mental health and addiction problems before they become acute. Most of the suggestions are supported by a body of empirical evidence, in Canada and abroad; all are supported by the experience of consumers and service providers working to improve care for people with mental health and addiction problems.
